Euro 2020: Daily briefing

Follow the coverage live as Italy and Wales kick off the final round of Euro 2020 group stage matches in Rome.

Roberto Mancini’s side have been nothing short of excellent so far, perhaps the most complete and consistent nation in the group stage, having taken two out of two wins in style. They first beat Turkey on a spectacular opening night, before beating Switzerland with arguably even more conviction by the same score of 3-0. Mancini chose to rotate the squad for this game as Italy have already qualified for the round of 16 and even a draw seals the top spot. Marco Verratti, Federico Chiesa and Andrea Belotti are among those who feature outside the regular 11 so far.

As for Wales, a somewhat fortuitous point against Switzerland now seems quite crucial, as the well-deserved victory that follows against Turkey leaves the Dragons with one foot in the last 16 themselves. A draw here secures second place, a win puts Rob Page’s side at the top of the group – but even the loss should prove to be of no consequence with four points likely to be enough to see Wales pass – so much that the goal difference is not affected too much in this match.

Gareth Bale’s rediscovery of his form will be crucial to their knockout hopes, although Page has also looked to protect one or two starting players who were on yellow cards. The Welsh bench will also likely watch the score of the other group in the game, Switzerland v Turkey, which is being played at the same time. Euro 2020: Italy 0-0 Wales

17 ′: Italy are now starting to create more half chances, with Mancini’s side using both flanks. Federico Bernardeschi floats between either wing and plays against Belotti, and Bernardeschi sees a lot of the ball in these early stages.
Toloi’s volley from outside the box takes a nasty deflection from Matteo Pessina and cannons towards Welsh goalkeeper Danny Ward, who chokes the ball.

Euro 2020: Italy 0-0 Wales

12 ′: Half a chance for the Italian Andrea Belotti, who throws himself on a deep cross from Emerson from the left side, but the Turin striker lacks good contact with the ball. He may also be in an offside position.
Nice skill from Federico Chiesa on the right side, as he overtakes Gunter and makes a very good cross, but is pushed back by the Welsh defense. Italy is starting to turn the gears now after a slow start.

Euro 2020: Italy 0-0 Wales

9 ′: Prudent start on both sides, the opposing team sitting down and allowing Italy to have most of the ball, but Wales keeps Italy at bay. Italy, meanwhile, feel right in the game.
Switzerland took the lead against Turkey with Haris Seferovic scoring from the edge of the box. This makes things a bit precarious for Wales, as if Italy wins, and the Swiss victory, Wales would drop to third place, instead of qualifying.

Aaron Ramsey at Juventus:
Ramsey lines up today against the nation where he currently plays his football – in Serie A.
Ramsey joined Juventus from Arsenal two years ago but is struggling to assert himself with the Italian giants.
Ramsey undoubtedly joined Juve at the right time, the club was undergoing a transformation after the dismissal of Massimiliano Allegri and the hiring of Maurizio Sarri.
Ramsey struggled in his first season in Turin, making 34 appearances in all competitions, but many of them arrived late in games as a substitute.
Sarri was sacked after just one season and was replaced by Andrea Pirlo, and Ramsey played even less, with Pirlo going for a 4-4-2 system for most of the season.
He played 30 games in all competitions, but only accumulated around 1,500 minutes of football during the season.
Ramsey also struggled with fitness and even hired his own personal trainer.
Reports in Italy suggest that the club and the player have decided to move on to the Euro, with a return to the Premier League very likely.

“I didn’t know Stoke was so good,” Bale says

Welsh star Gareth Bale commented on Roberto Mancini’s comments that ‘Wales is similar to Stoke’.
Yesterday at his press conference, Mancini said he believes Wales play like the Stoke City sides they faced as Man City manager ten years ago:
“Stoke had a very difficult style of play, they were very difficult to solve,” Mancini said.
“It will be a very difficult game from a physical point of view because they are a powerful team like Stoke, but they are also very technical… Wales have players like (Joe) Allen, (Gareth) Bale and ( Daniel) James. They have quality and skillful players.
Bale then commented on Mancini’s comments, saying: “I didn’t know Stoke was that good,” he said with a smile.
Wales manager Robert Page was also asked about Mancini’s comments, but Page ignored them:
“I haven’t seen those comments,” Page said. “We don’t mind what other people say. We are fully focused on what we can do and how we can harm teams. “

Euro 2020: Italy vs Wales

Roberto Mancini made eight substitutions for the Wales game, the biggest turnover for an Italian manager at a major tournament since 1996.
At Euro 96, then Italian coach Arrigo Sacchi made five substitutions for the second group stage game against the Czech Republic.
Angelo Di Livio, Roberto Di Matteo, Alessandro Del Piero, Gianfranco Zola and Pierluigi Casiraghi, all holders of the 2-1 win over Russia in the first game, were replaced by Diego Fuser, Dino Baggio, Fabrizio Ravanelli, Roberto Donadoni and Enrico Chiesa.
Turnover did not work out and Italy lost the game 2-1. This meant that Italy had to take part in the last game against Germany to improve the Czechs’ result against Russia.
Zola missed a penalty, the Czech Republic drew 3-3 against Russia and Italy returned home.
However, there is no way that will happen in today’s game for Mancini’s side.

‘Wales is like Stoke,’ says Mancini

Italy boss Roberto Mancini said Wales have a similar style of play to Stoke City.
Mancini met Stoke when he was manager of Manchester City during his Premier League stint a decade ago, and sees similarities in Wales’ approach.
“Stoke had a very difficult style of play, they were very difficult to resolve,” Mancini said at a press conference on Saturday.
“It will be a very difficult game from a physical point of view because they are a powerful team like Stoke, but they are also very technical… Wales have players like (Joe) Allen, (Gareth) Bale and ( Daniel) James. They have quality and skillful players.
