India reports highest Covid-19 death toll in the world in a single day; ITV News – –

By ITV News Journalist Sanjay Jha and IndeInde Thursday reported a record high of 6,148 Covid-19 deaths in the past 24 hours, the highest number of deaths from the virus on record worldwide since the start of the pandemic.

However, the number of new cases started to decline and remained below 100,000 daily cases for three consecutive days.

The increase was recorded after the Indian state of Bihar in eastern India sharply increased its tally to account for people who died from the disease at home or in private hospitals.

It was not clear when these deaths occurred in Bihar, but this is the first time the state has conducted a data cleansing exercise.

The health department of Bihar, one of India’s poorest states, on Wednesday revised the total number of Covid-related deaths to more than 9,400, from around 5,400, an increase of 72.8 %.

“These deaths had not been counted before,” said Pratyaya Amrit, the state’s top official in the health department.

“The increase is due to deaths reported in private hospitals, in home isolation and post-Covid complications,” he added.

Bihar revised its record after the local High Court ordered an audit of victims during the second wave of the coronavirus in April and May.

The court order followed allegations that the state government was hiding the scale of infections and deaths.

The total number of Covid cases in India now stands at nearly 29.2 million with a total of 359,676 deaths, according to data released by the Indian Ministry of Health.

Health experts said many deaths had not been recorded in COVID-19 counts.

Testimonies from doctors as well as the discovery of thousands of unreported deaths in Bihar, both reinforce suspicions that the total number of deaths in India is significantly higher than the official figure, as testing facilities are scarce in the countries. rural areas, where two-thirds of Indians live, and hospitals are scarce.

After a weak and failed vaccine rollout, India has decided to give adults free Covid vaccines from June 21.
