The City of Burnaby will have bragging rights when a new residential tower is completed.

One of the towers under construction as part of the Gilmore Place development adjacent to the Gilmore SkyTrain station in the Brentwood area will be the tallest in British Columbia at 64 stories or over 700 feet.

Once built, it will replace the Shangri La Hotel in Vancouver as the tallest in British Columbia. Technically, some of the residential towers in Metro Burnaby will look taller, but that’s because Metrotown is at a higher elevation.

“Gilmore Place is a planned community that will transform Burnaby’s western gateway into an incredible urban center for residents and visitors,” said a statement from developer Onni. “Featuring one of Canada’s tallest residential towers, the seamlessly integrated Gilmore SkyTrain station, world-class shopping and entertainment, convenient offices and luxurious residential towers, Gilmore Place will redefine metropolitan life in one of the neighborhoods. the most promising of Burnaby, Brentwood. Live above your own downtown, with stunning panoramic views, contemporary finishes and unparalleled amenity spaces exclusive to residents.

The first phase of development will house three towers, the other two being 43 and 51 storeys high, totaling 1,550 units spread across the three buildings. A podium on the sixth floor will link the three towers.

The development designed by IBI Group will include 500,000 square feet of retail space and 1 million square feet of office space.

Future phases of the Gilmore Place project will see a total of ten towers surrounding the Gilmore SkyTrain station.

According to staff reports, properties planned for phases two and three are currently either vacant or occupied by older light industrial buildings or parking lots. Northeast of the Gilmore Place plan, where towers nine and 10 are slated to go up, is a Honda dealership.

Gilmore Place’s master plan received final council approval in July 2018, and is part of the city’s long-term plan for downtown Brentwood.
