Vernon’s commitment to Brian Kelly, Marcus Freeman and the rest of Notre Dame’s coaching staff comes just two days after concluding an unofficial visit to South Bend. He also visited Ohio state for a camp last week and said it was “quite a distance” until he finally made up his mind.
Vernon is the 18th overall prospect and sixth defensive lineman in the 2023 cycle. He’s second in Ohio, behind just five-star safety Sonny Styles of Pickerington Central. All eyes will now be on Styles, whose father played for Ohio State and whose brother plays for Notre Dame.
Provided he doesn’t change his mind, Vernon will be the first five-star from Ohio not to attend Ohio State since Clemson won the battle for Jackson Carman, the 2018 cycle’s offensive tackle. is the first five-star from Ohio to choose Notre Dame since Tommy Kraemer, a 2016 Elder High School graduate, the nation’s third offensive tackle, did so in the middle of the last decade.
