Andriy Yarmolenko scored a goal and an assist as Ukraine beat North Macedonia 2-1 on Thursday to increase their chances of reaching the round of 16 of the European Championship, leaving their opponents’ hopes to a wire.

Yarmolenko gave Ukraine the lead from a corner kick in the 29th minute, popping up to the far post to beat Stole Dimitrievski with a side foot after hanging on to Oleksandr Karavaev’s shot.

The Ukrainian captain helped double the lead five minutes later, receiving the ball next to the right and finding Roman Yaremchuk, who rushed into the penalty area and deflected a low shot past Dimitrievski at the near post.

Ezgjan Alioski brought North Macedonia back into the game after a 57th-minute penalty after Karavaev fouled Goran Pandev. Georgiy Bushchan saved the kick but the ball rebounded directly to Alioski who shot his second home attempt.

Ukraine received a late penalty after Daniel Avramovsky was tried for handling the ball following an intervention by the video assistant referee, but Dimitrievsky held off Ruslan Malinovskyi’s effort on the spot.

The defeat means North Macedonia, who lost 3-1 to Austria in their first Group C game, need Austria to beat the Netherlands later on Thursday if they extend their stay in the of their first major tournament.

Full time: Ukraine 2-1 North Macedonia

Trajkovski has another ambitious swing on goal, but his shot misses.
Ukraine claim their first Euro victory since a 2-1 win over Sweden nine years ago, with Yarmolenko and Yaremchuk once again finding their way to the net.
Alioski pulled one off by scoring an immediate rebound from his saved penalty, but North Macedonia failed to equalize.
Both goalies took the lead and each saved a penalty, but Ukrainian Bushcan takes the kudos and, more importantly, the points.
