Tesla is known to have intense late-quarter delivery surges due to its distribution system, which is very different from other automakers that use third-party dealers.
We expected this quarter to be particularly intense due to a backlog of Model S deliveries as the new version has been delayed.
On top of that, more than 10,000 vehicles were put on hold last month, delaying many deliveries until Tesla was able to push its new computer vision system.
Now Electrek got a new email CEO Elon Musk sent to employees asking them to pull out all the stops for the end of the quarter:
“Overall we are doing well, but the next 12 days are very important for production and delivery this quarter. Please go ahead! ”
Musk is careful not to share the actual production and delivery targets, which Tesla has kept only a tight circle for the past 2 years in order to avoid leaks.
Tesla will release its production and delivery figures for the second quarter of 2021 in the first week of July.
Here is the full email:
Overall we are doing well, but the next 12 days are very important for production and delivery this quarter. Please go ahead!
Elon is intentionally vague as he cannot share the actual numbers knowing they can leak, but we have to read between the lines.
Looks like Elon thinks the delivery goal is achievable, but the team is going to go through a pretty intense push at the end of the quarter to get there.
Now the question is: what is the delivery goal?
It’s hard to determine, but I would expect Tesla to aim for another delivery record, which was achieved in the last quarter with 185,000 deliveries worldwide.
However, supply chain issues have undoubtedly affected Tesla negatively this quarter and it is not impossible that deliveries are actually down from last quarter due to lower production.
Therefore, the production figures are going to be very interesting this quarter.
Let us know your best guess for Tesla’s second quarter delivery and production numbers in the comments section below.
