LOS ANGELES – A suspect who traveled illegally to an airfield at Los Angeles International Airport was arrested Thursday evening, the same night Prince Harry was waiting to board a flight back to the UK , according to reports.
At least two runways were briefly closed after the driver walked through a door at a FedEx air cargo facility, FOX 11 in Los Angeles reported.
A helicopter video showed around 10 police SUVs and a dozen officers at the scene. A CBS reporter said the car went through a door at the FedEx freight facility and, at one point, rolled onto the track.
Harry is reportedly leaving California to attend the unveiling of a statue of his mother, Princess Diana, at Kensington Palace. He was seen arriving at LAX in a black SUV, The Sun US reported.
The prince’s flight left 45 minutes after the airport incident, according to the media.
The airport said in a statement posted on Twitter that the airfield had been inspected and that “one southern runway has reopened and the other will open shortly. The northern runways continued to function normally ”.
No motive was given for the driver, FOX 11 reported and there is no indication that it was linked to Prince Harry’s presence at the airport.
Harry and Prince William will appear together at the July 1 unveiling on what would have been their mother’s 60th birthday. This will be the first time the brothers have seen each other since Prince Philip’s funeral in April, according to The Sun.
The visit was described by one source as “fleeting”; Harry’s wife, Meghan Markle, will remain in California with their newborn daughter and young son.
