The R-rated Harley Quinn animated series features gory humor, a gallows, and other grown-up elements that allow her to make the most of her home without censorship on the DC Universe streaming service. That is, until a recent Variety interview with co-creators and executive producers Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker reveals that there is a place no DC superheroes will go.
“… In this third season of ‘Harley’ [when] we had a moment where Batman was going after Catwoman, ”said Halpern. “And DC was like, ‘You can’t do that. You absolutely cannot do that. They say, ‘Heroes don’t do that.’ “
Halpern has discovered the main reason the comic book giant won’t let Batman have oral sex on Catwoman.
“So we said, ‘Are you saying heroes are just selfish lovers? They said, “No, it’s because we sell consumer toys for the heroes. It’s hard to sell a toy if Batman lashes out at someone too. “
The animated series starting in 2019 follows the misadventures of Harley Quinn and her villainous colleague Poison Ivy, after Harley realizes her boyfriend Joker doesn’t like her and breaks up with him.
The hindsight drew social media responses from the Batman cast to DC directors.
“Canon” was everything, with a picture of… well, see for yourself.
“Is he or not …?” Previous Batman actor Val Kilmer tweeted, along with a 1995 Batman Forever GIF, in which Nicole Kidman’s Dr. Chase Meridian attempts to seduce The Caped Crusader. “We could try. I’ll bring the wine… ”she said.
“Thank you DC for making this Batman moment possible”, one tweeted.
History also led to more stories about Batman’s love life resurfaçage.
“The recent report that Batman is not allowed to talk about Catwoman brought me to this delightful story of Adam West (The Batman of the 1960s) and Frank Gorshin getting kicked out of a Hollywood orgy because they wouldn’t break the character ”, we wrote.
Even the comic book writers stepped in.
“There was also a little setback when we did the Green Arrow / Black Canary oral sex scenes in my run with @philhester and @andeparks 20 years ago. But my point of view @DCComics the editorial was “Oliver Queen Knows How To Quiver The Ladies.” Especially when he hits the nail on the head, ”wrote Kevin Smith.
“* Check out why Batman is all the rage * * Go back to writing Nightwing, maybe a more… generous hero, *” DC Comics Writer Tom Taylor wrote.
