How many third-ranked teams qualify for the round of 16? Will the head-to-head or the goal difference count? Objective explains
So far, eight teams have qualified for the round of 16 as group winners and runner-up: Italy, Wales, Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Austria, England and Croatia. Switzerland and the Czech Republic have already qualified as one of the best teams ranked third.
Sweden and France are also assured of progress but will have to play their last group matches before being classified.
Meanwhile, many giants are still fighting to get out of the group stages. Spain have yet to confirm their qualification as Portugal and Germany are engaged in an epic battle in Group F, aka the death group.
Let’s take a look at the rules and qualifying criteria in case the teams are tied on points at the end of the group stages.

How many teams qualify for the knockout stages of Euro 2020?
There are six groups with four teams each at Euro 2020.
The six group winners and the six runners-up automatically qualify for the round of 16. The remaining four places will be taken by the top four teams from among the six third-ranked teams.
How will the group ranking be determined at Euro 2020?
At Euro 2020, if multiple teams in a group are tied on points, a head-to-head record will be used to break the tie. If the teams are still level, the goal difference will come into play. Here are all the different Euro tie-breaking scenarios:
- Higher number of points obtained in matches played between the teams in question (or face-to-face record)
- Superior goal difference resulting from matches played between the teams in question (in the case of 3 or more teams finishing in points)
- Higher number of goals scored in matches played between the teams in question (in the case of 3 or more teams finishing the level on points)
If some teams are still tied after that, the same criteria 1 to 3 are reapplied exclusively to matches between teams still at level to determine their final ranking.
For example, if the above criteria are used for three teams with equal points and after use, two are still equal, the same criteria will be reviewed with the matches between the two teams taken into account.
If the teams are still level, the following criteria are applied:
- Higher goal difference in all group matches
- Most goals scored in all group matches
- Most wins in all group matches
- Penalty shot
- Lower total disciplinary points in all group matches (1 point for a single yellow card, 3 points for a red card following two yellow cards, 3 points for a direct red card, 4 points for a yellow card followed by ‘a direct red card card)
- Better position in the general classification of European Qualifiers.
Will penalty kicks be used to determine the Euro 2020 group stage standings?
If in the last round of the group stage, two teams compete against each other and each have the same number of points, as well as the same number of goals scored and conceded, and the score ends in a tie in their match, their ranking is determined by a penalty shootout. (This criterion is not used if more than two teams have the same number of points).
However, that might not happen this time around, as no team meeting the above-mentioned criteria will face off on the final matchday.

What do Ronaldo and Portugal need to do to qualify?
A draw or victory against France in their last group game will allow Portugal to advance to the round of 16. In the event of a loss for Portugal against France, they will finish third in the group. But as they already have a better goal difference than Finland and Ukraine (both of which have played in their group stages), Portugal will qualify practically as one of the best teams in third place, subject to their goal difference.
They need to make sure they don’t lose to France by more than two goals. In such a case, they will definitively qualify for the round of 16 regardless of the outcome of the matches in groups D and E.
If they lose by a margin of three or more goals, then they will have to depend on the results of Group E.
