What is queerbaiting?

Urban Dictionary defines queerbaiting as: “A marketing technique used to attract queer viewers that involves creating romantic or sexual tension between two characters of the same sex, but without ever making or evolving into canon.”

The term is also used in connection with the music industry when artists appear to use or allude to their sexuality to attract fans, without revealing their sexuality.

Singers who have previously been accused of queerbaiting include Rita Ora, after releasing her song Girls, and Ariana Grande after releasing Monopoly.

Recently, actress Dove Cameron revealed that part of the reason she became bisexual was that fans thought she was engaging in queerbaiting.

TV shows have also been accused of queerbaiting, with viewers of The 100 and Supernatural having previously debated the characters, the BBC reports.

Rich Ferraro, communications director at GLAAD, added to the idea, saying that it can sometimes also be called “gaybaiting”.

They told Yahoo Life: “We often see it from brands or talents who are trying to market products or projects to the community and aim not to create change, but to profit from LGBTQ dollars. . “

Other celebrities have been accused of queerbaiting, including Nick Jonas, Rita Ora after the release of the song Girls, with her later release as a bisexual, and Ariana Grande, after releasing her song Monopoly in 2019, reports the BBC.

Responding to complaints in 2014, Nick told Pride Source: “Everyone has a right to their own opinion. I think it’s unfortunate that some people have to find a negative in every situation.

“Clearly my heart is in the right place… and if they just looked at my life and my gay friends and the authentic nature of where my heart is, they would just see that they are somehow ignorant. “

While more recently, Dove Cameron shared that part of the reason she came out publicly bisexual was because fans believed she was engaging in queerbaiting.

Billie was also criticized for her song Wish You Were Gay in 2019, with the star later addressing the fury and saying it was “not meant to be an insult”
