UFC Vegas 29 fell last night (Saturday, June 19, 2021) inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, which saw Chan Sung Jung dominate Dan Ige for five rounds (review here) during of the main event of the evening. In the main co-event, Serghei Spivak beat Aleksei Oleinik after 15 minutes of heavyweight action.
Biggest winner: Chan Sung Jung
“The Korean Zombie” had one of the best and most dominant performances of his career against Ige, showing just about every aspect of his well-rounded arsenal. Ige had a few good times, but that was all Jung, who showed great patience when needed and jumped when the opportunity presented itself. The win puts him back in the win column after losing to Brian Ortega in his last fight, which almost prompted him to retire from the fighting game. Instead, he’s now central to the featherweight championship image, especially with Max Holloway having to retire from his fight against Yair Rodriguez.
Finalist: Marron Mat
Before fighting Dhiego Lima, Brown was in desperate need of a win after losing two straight losses to Miguel Baeza and Carlos Condit. A third straight loss would likely have led to “The Immortal” being released from promotion or even another retirement. But Brown will live to fight another day after breaking his slip with a one-stroke knockout victory over Lima, giving him his first win since December 2019. It also got him a nice 50,000 bonus. $.
Biggest loser: Alexeï Oleinik
Oleinik’s ship continues to take on water. The 43-year-old heavyweight suffered his third straight loss after failing to Serghei Spivak. “The Boa Constrictor” hasn’t fought for over a year and three straight losses don’t look good for an aging veteran. Dana White and Co. have already dropped two struggling heavyweights in the form of Alistair Overeem and Junior dos Santos, so the future doesn’t look too bright for Oleinik after his latest setback.
