Anne Hidalgo: the mayor of Paris alludes to her candidacy to become the first woman president of France

PARIS: The socialist mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, has hinted that she plans to run in the 2022 presidential elections, saying having a woman in the presidency for the first time would change the French’s relations with the leaders, in an interview published Wednesday.
If she declared her candidacy, Hidalgo would enter an increasingly crowded field but dominated by center and right-wing figures, with centrist President Emmanuel Macron and far-right leader Marine Le Pen set to face each other in the ‘a second round.
But the Socialists have so far had no impact on the race, still suffering after the 2012-2017 single term of the last French Socialist President Francois Hollande which left him so unpopular that he did not bother. to represent himself.
Asked about her intentions in 2022 by the weekly Le 1, Hidalgo said: “If strong action is not taken now, neither our children nor our grandchildren will have the opportunity to plan the world they want. ”
She said the disengagement of the middle class from politics risked fueling the rise of populism and eroding democracy.
“This invites me to act for my country, in order to make another voice heard, to propose another political offer,” Hidalgo said.
She added: “I am convinced that a woman can change the relationship to power. It would be a total break. ”
Mayor of Paris since 2014, Hidalgo has sought to make the congested French capital a cleaner and greener place to live, making environmental policies his calling card.
Last month, a plan was announced to ban most downtown vehicles from next year, while city hall said this week that motorcycle and scooter owners will have to pay to park their trips at Paris.
