A Florida police officer was seriously injured Wednesday night after scuffling with a motorist who rushed out of the scene, officials said.
The Daytona Beach Police Department is offering a $ 100,000 award “to anyone who can assist authorities in locating the man who shot one of our officers in the head,” according to a press release from the agency.
The incident took place just before 9 p.m. ET after the officer went to investigate a “suspicious vehicle” in a back parking lot at 133 Kingston Avenue, police said.
The department released body camera footage of the officer approaching a parked sport utility vehicle before asking a man in the driver’s seat if he lived there.
As the motorist exited the car, the officer asked him to sit down, pictures appeared to show.
“Why do you ask, ‘I live here? ” What’s happening ? The man asked.
A fight ensued before the camera went off, according to the 29-second clip released by the department. Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young said the motorist left after shooting the officer, who was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center.
The officer is 26 and a three-year veteran of the department, Young told reporters.
“He is a young child and I stress that because most officers (when they are injured) you would see their wives or their children responding in the hospital, it is his mother in there,” he said. -he declares. “So that tells you where he is in his life. “
The shooting led to the search of a nearby apartment where three bulletproof vests, several high-capacity magazines, a rifle, a semi-automatic handgun and boxes of rifle cartridges were found, Young added.
The suspect has been identified as Othal Wallace, 29, who may be in a gray 2016 Honda HR-V with a California tag 7TNX532.
Nearby freeway ramps were blocked for about three hours early Thursday as police searched for Wallace, who was still wanted at dawn.
