The penultimate Sunday night shutter Easttown mare has viewers obsessed with a photograph with a fervor not seen since the glory days of Chad Kroeger. By the end of the episode, the series’ main thriller appeared to be over: Billy Ross (Robbie Tann) had apparently confessed to both killing Erin McMenamin (Cailee Spaeny) and being the real father of his son, DJ But before. You could say that “Ebert’s Law of Character Economics strikes again,” the series gave us a last-minute final twist in the form of a snapshot.
The All-Important Image first appeared in Episode Five, appearing in one of Erin’s diaries, and was significant enough that her bold-loving BFF Jess (Ruby Cruz) chose to pocket it. surreptitiously rather than letting it burn. along with the rest of Erin’s memories. Struck with guilt, Jess eventually took the photo to the Easttown Police Department, where Chief Carter (John Douglas) found its contents so shocking that he immediately ordered a subordinate to warn Mare of his mission to apprehend Billy. Obviously, this evidence throws the case into complete disarray. (Or as Mare would say, toahdal disuhrreay.)
But since this is TV, viewers have been kept in the dark as to what exactly is in the photo. Despite the fact that several characters have now seen the image, we only saw it from behind, like a 5 by 7 inch version of the carrying case. Pulp Fiction. In an earlier era of TV fandom, this could have been the end. But thanks to the magic of technology, Large fans convinced themselves they could unlock the mystery. You see, for a split second the photo is backlit and semi-transparent. Maybe by adjusting the brightness and contrast we can improve it and decipher what is going on in this very important image.
Vulture doesn’t have a supercomputer, but we have a team of photo editors, and they’ve started this improved close-up attempt:

Wow! If you squint, it looks like you can see Erin… somewhere. (But of course she would have be in it, right?) Personally, I see her in the upper left corner of the frame, lying with her right arm folded over her chest. Some people on Reddit see it in the lower right corner. Or maybe it’s cut near the top? And what if you rotate the photo to fit the way Jess originally saw it? Well, then that obviously becomes a photo of Erin with the male cast member you suspect is the killer: John Ross, Frank, maybe Lori’s grandson, Ryan? Or could it be Mare’s late son Kevin, who many fans believe is the real father of Erin’s baby? (In this case, the killer obviously wouldn’t be Kevin, since ghosts don’t seem to exist in Easttown mare.) The only person we can be sure of is do not there is Billy, because that would hardly be a surprise. But maybe it’s Billy and someone else? The possibilities are truly endless. Whichever post-production employee is responsible for creating this image cheese quite cloudy deserves a huge increase.
In any case, Easttown mare gave us a perfect Rorschach TV test. In the midst of all the noise, there is only one image that passes loud and clear: the one that says “listen to Sunday!” “
