Transport union says mask policy amounts to hypocrisy – fr

LONDON, ONT. – The union representing the employees of the London Transit Commission calls the LTC for what it says is a double standard.

In a press release Tuesday, Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 741 President Mike Gauthier said: “Passengers without masks get on buses with impunity and expose workers and others. passengers at risk of infection with COVID-19.

He went on to say that the LTC “overly” enforces the mask rules for public transport workers, “The hypocrisy stings and the workers are angry.”

Speaking to CTV News London, Gauthier said bus operators are sanctioned daily for what he considers “minor mask transgressions.”

“If they’re caught with their masks down like that for a minute, that’s right, and someone calls them and reports them.” What about the guy getting on the bus or the lady getting on the bus without a mask? No application again. I mean, they say I wear my mask protect you from me. But when they’re not wearing their masks, who protects me as an operator? “

Some passengers CTV News London spoke to said they often see people on the bus who are not wearing masks or wearing the mask inappropriately.

Don Murray said it made him uncomfortable, “because it’s very tight. They are walking very close beside you. They breathe on you. So yes, that makes me very uncomfortable.

Passenger Kim Porter said she sees unmasked passengers every time she gets on a bus and doesn’t understand why.

“I don’t know if they have an exemption. I don’t know if they just can’t be bothered. I don’t know if they think it’s a conspiracy. I don’t know if they are sick.

LTC director Kelly Paleczny was unavailable for an interview on Tuesday, but provided a statement that the LTC chose not to let operators enforce the mask’s warrant, citing the potential for violence at the location of work.

“During the pandemic, we have had a number of incidents in which operators attempted to enforce the mask’s mandate which resulted in verbal and, in some cases, physical assaults on the operator and / or the vehicle.”

The statement also points out that the LTC has implemented safety measures for operators, including “the installation of barriers on buses and the obligation for them to wear masks at all times on the bus, as well as protective eyepieces when they have to go out. behind the barrier.

The union has said it would like LTC to implement a “no mask, no conduct” policy, like that of the neighboring towns of Windsor and Hamilton.

Murray said he was not convinced such a policy would be applicable on London buses.

“I understand why they’re upset, but the point is, what are they going to do? How can they apply it? And they’re not about to put security guards on the buses like they do in Toronto, so… ”
