Before the 1998 World Cup final, host France made sure that a certain Ronaldo was not going to ruin his chances of glory at the Stade de France.
Marcel Desailly, Lillian Thuram and Frank Leboeuf can be seen discussing how to try and stop the deadly striker from Brazil, who had scored 34 goals in all competitions during this campaign.
That’s right. These world-class defenders devoted an entire training session to “The Phenomenon” a few days before the critical shock.
You can hear players discussing how to stop those famous steps, as well as not getting too tight when scoring it. It’s a brilliant watch, complete with captions.
The training session seemed to have worked, with the French finally beating mighty Brazil 3-0 thanks to goals from Zinedine Zidane (2) and Emmanuel Petit.
But this important training session could not have counted for nothing after Ronaldo was not originally named in the starting lineup.
It was believed that ‘R9’ had been hit by a disease bug, but just 30 minutes before kick-off it was confirmed that Ronaldo would start against France.
The 1998 World Cup was certainly controversial. Michel Platini admitted that it was, in fact, fixed.
He said: “When we organized the schedule, we did a little trick. If we finished first in the group and Brazil finished first, we wouldn’t be able to meet until the final.
“We were not bored for six years organizing the World Cup so as not to make some little shenanigans.
“You think the others didn’t do it for their France-Brazil World Cup in the final, it was everyone’s dream. “
