There will be jobs at STAR Labs after this season of The CW’s Flash, so anyone with experience as a tech genius and / or multiple alternate universe versions of the same guy should put their resumes in order. It’s a roundabout way of saying that Carlos Valdes and Tom Cavanagh are going to leave Flash for good once the current season (the show’s seventh) is over. Both have been around from the very beginning, with Valdes playing Cisco Ramon (and later superhero Vibe) and Cavanagh playing Harrison Wells / Eobard Thawne (the Evil Reverse Flash) in the first season and then various other versions of Harrison Wells from different realities in each subsequent season. It’s a common joke in the series that Cavanagh’s character almost always dies or is written somehow every year, only to come back as a different person, but this time it seems that this is really happening.
In fact, however, it would be fairer to say that already come. As pointed out by Deadline (who first reported this news), Cavanagh was actually supposed to leave the series at the end of latest season until COVID delays hit, which is why he has been conspicuously absent for most of season seven. His last appearance as a series regular was back in March, in the “Oh, that was supposed to be the finale” episodefrom, but he will apparently appear a few more times before his real goodbye. As for Valdes, he’ll be there until the season finale, after which someone else on Team Flash will have to start coming up with catchy villain names for the villains Barry is fighting.
In a statement, showrunner Eric Wallace noted that Cavanagh and Valdes were “an integral part” of Flash and that they “happily keep the door open for returning apparitions.” This means that the characters probably won’t die, but this being Flash, they could always come back as new versions of these characters from different universes.
