Construction of the 2.6-kilometer tunnel in Burnaby, British Columbia, has started for the Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion Project.

The company said in a press release that work on the tunnel connecting the Westridge Marine and Burnaby terminals began on Wednesday.

He says the start of tunnel construction is one of the major elements of the Lower Mainland expansion project and is expected to take just over six months.

Construction of the tunnel began after a year of preparation and more than six years of planning, design and regulatory process.

Trans Mountain says the tunnel will be over four meters in diameter and will have three delivery pipelines to load ships at the Westridge Marine terminal.

The company said the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project is on budget and on schedule to be completed by the end of 2022.
