Thirteen Toronto quarantine hotel staff tested positive for COVID-19 – fr

TORONTO – Public health officials have confirmed 13 cases of COVID-19 linked to a hotel in Toronto that is being used as a federal quarantine facility for those entering Canada from abroad.

Toronto Public Health (TPH) confirmed on Saturday that they were investigating the cases at the Crowne Plaza Toronto Airport Hotel, located near Freeway 27 and Dixon Road, but the city did not disclose the exact number of people infected. at this moment.

Toronto’s medical officer of health, Dr Eileen de Villa, was also low-key when asked about the number of cases on Monday, while discussing privacy concerns and the status of the investigation.

In a press release on Tuesday, the city said the 13 infections were linked to hotel staff members who now follow TPH’s advice.

Despite the number of cases, the city says the risk remains low because the facility is not open to the public.

“TPH continues to work with the facility to identify all cases and with the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) to review and ensure that appropriate public health and infection prevention measures are in place” , the city said.

TPH and PHAC today carried out on-site inspections of the hotel and found that there was “strong adherence to public health measures.”

The city says it is now working to determine whether a partial hotel closure is warranted.

Under the Occupational Class Ordinance introduced last month, the city has the power to shut down any workplace where five or more cases of COVID-19 are reported within 14 days.

The city says the hotel will not be completely closed because it “provides an essential service to keep Torontonians safe.” If a partial shutdown is ordered, the city says it will post its “active outbreak” list here accordingly.

The Crowne Plaza hotel is one of 20 quarantine facilities approved by the city government. International travelers entering Canada must stay at one of the hotels for three nights while awaiting the result of a COVID-19 test which they must take upon arrival.

Those with negative test results can continue their 14-day quarantine at home.
