These are the countries that no longer have Covid vaccines at all – fr

Many countries rely on temperature controls to limit the spread of Covid because they don’t have vaccines

Some of the world’s poorest countries are being left behind in the fight against Covid and have not given a single vaccine.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said a dozen countries – many of them in Africa – were still waiting for vaccines.

Despite making up 16% of the world’s population, Africa has only delivered 1% of the total number of coronavirus bites. The last aligned on the continent are Chad, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Eritrea and Tanzania.

There is a risk that new worrisome variants will appear in places where there are no vaccines, said Gian Gandhi, UNICEF coordinator for Covax, the UN-backed program to help countries. low and middle income.

“So we should all be worried about any lack of coverage anywhere in the world,” Gandhi said, urging high-income countries to give doses to countries still waiting.

In the small hospital where Dr Oumaima Djarma, 33, works in N’Djamena, the capital of Chad, there is no debate on the best vaccine against the coronavirus.

There is simply no vaccine – not even for doctors and nurses like her, who treat patients who have tested positive for Covid.

“I find it unfair and unfair, and it’s something that saddens me,” said the infectious disease doctor.

“I don’t even have that choice. The first vaccine that comes with an authorization, I’ll take it.

She added: “Everyone dies from this disease, rich or poor. Everyone should have the opportunity, the chance to be vaccinated, especially those who are most at risk.

Chad is expected to receive doses of Pfizer next month if it can set up the cold storage facilities needed to ensure the safety of the vaccine. This is a challenge, as a third of the country is in the Sahara Desert and temperatures regularly reach 43.5 ° C.

Some countries have also taken longer to meet the requirements for receiving doses, including signing compensation waivers with manufacturers and setting up distribution plans.

In Haiti, not a single vaccine has been given to the more than 11 million people who live in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

Haiti was due to receive 756,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine via Covax, but government officials said they lacked the infrastructure to store them and feared they would have to throw them away.

Several small Pacific island countries have yet to receive vaccines, although the lack of outbreaks in some of these locations has reduced the urgency of vaccination campaigns.

Vanuatu, with a population of 300,000, expects to receive its first doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine later this month, but it has only recorded three cases of the coronavirus, all in quarantine.
