The women’s Tour de France will return in 2022, according to the race director – fr

The women’s Tour de France is set to be relaunched next year after a 33-year absence, with race director Christian Prudhomme saying it will be held after the men’s event.

“It would have happened this year if it hadn’t been for the COVID-19 pandemic, obviously, and especially if the Tokyo Olympics hadn’t taken place after the (men’s) Tour, so the best riders could not be available, ”Prudhomme said. The Guardian.

“But the decision has been made. There will be a Tour de France women in 2022 which will closely follow the Tour (men). “

The women’s Tour de France used to run from 1984 to 1989, and Prudhomme said he needed to make sure the race didn’t end up losing money if it wanted to have a permanent place on the calendar.

“What we want to do is create a race that will stay the course, that will be put in place and will stand the test of time,” he added.

“What this means is that the race cannot lose money. Today, all the women’s races that we organize make us lose money.

“If he makes money that’s great, but he doesn’t have to lose any money or he’ll end up like the Tour in the 80s and he’ll die. “

Prudhomme said the challenge was to put together a race that could “live 100 years”.

“That’s why we want him to follow the Men’s Tour, so that the majority of channels that broadcast the Men’s Tour will also cover him. “

The 2022 Men’s Tour will run from July 1 to 25.
