Police said they were called to Walker Avenue in Great Lever just before 4:45 a.m. this morning.
A teenager was taken to hospital with multiple stab wounds but later died of his injuries, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.
No arrests have yet been made.
A large cordon is in place with a number of streets having been taped off including Walker Avenue, Lowick Avenue, Linstead Avenue and Royland Court.
Currently, Forenisc crime scene officers are at the scene.
Detective Superintendent Chris Bridge, of the Districts of Wigan and Bolton, said: “This incident will naturally be a huge shock to the community and our hearts go out to the boy’s family at this horrific time.
“These are only the first steps in our investigation, but we want to reassure the public that we are doing everything we can to piece together what happened and find those responsible.
“There will be an increased police presence in the area as we conduct a number of investigative leads and anyone involved in the area will be able to speak to our officers.
“I urge anyone who has information or who has witnessed anything in the region to come forward. Even the smallest information can be crucial to our investigation. “
