Robert Griffin III wants to join Trey Lance – fr

The 49ers don’t have a quarterback on their roster that remotely resembles Trey Lance’s skills. There is a free agent quarterback who not only has similar skills but also knows Kyle Shanahan and wants to sign with the 49ers.
Former No. 2 pick of General Robert Griffin III is ready to jump into a mentoring role for Lance after a few years as a bouncing companion from Washington, to Cleveland, to Baltimore. He joined the coverage of Bleacher Report during the project and said he was open to a meeting with Shanahan.

“I’m excited for him. I think it will be great, ”Griffin said after explaining the rigors of joining Shanahan’s offense as a rookie. “And to be honest with you, I don’t think there is a guy on the list who would be better suited to come and mentor the kid than I am. So who knows? Maybe there’s an in-store meeting with the Shanahans.

Griffin burst onto the scene in 2012 as a Pro Bowler and Offensive Rookie of the Year with Mike Shanahan as Washington’s head coach and Kyle Shanahan leading the offense. He had 3,200 yards, 20 touchdowns and just five interceptions. He also ran for 815 yards and seven touchdowns.

The other quarterbacks on the 49ers roster are Jimmy Garoppolo, Nate Sudfeld, Josh Rosen and Josh Johnson. Johnson is a good athlete, but he is several years older than Griffin and does not have in-depth experience with Shanahan’s offense.

If San Francisco decides that Lance needs this type of mentor, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Shanahan call on his former QB.
