If you’re curious about how this remake of the 1996/97 arcade hit holds up on the Switch before it arrived, it has now been reportedly revealed in a recent Fragments of Silicon interview (via The Wiki of the Dead Twitter account).
In terms of frame rate, the game will run at 60 fps docked and 30 fps in handheld mode, and in both modes it will be displayed in 720p. The Wiki of the Dead also provided additional information:
-First on Switch, currently in testing on 4 different platforms. Probably a Steam version.
– The user interface has been redesigned.
– Classic Mode (original game with updated graphics).
-Horde mode (fast paced, 15 times the number of enemies. Unlockable characters and stuff).
-Several control options available, including JoyCon controllers and gyro controls.
-Voice redone, deliberately “bad”.
-Music “extremely inspired” from the original, no option to listen to the OST of the original.
-The engine is Unity, like Panzer Dragoon: Remake.
-HD Rumble for pistol shooting effects.
-For research, the team played the original game via original hardware and emulation.
-No option to play the original HOTD; lost sources and it is “impossible” to extract assets.
– “Nostalgic mode” with low-poly graphics taken into account if demand is sufficient.
-A demo of the remake may be considered if enough people request it on Discord and Twitter.
-The remake team worked with Sega, but didn’t really speak to the staff at Sega AM1, the original developer of HOTD.
-COVID did not affect production; the team is used to working remotely.
-It was always planned that the remakes of HOTD 1 + 2 would be released separately.
-The physics of the ragdoll when killing enemies will not be changed; this is a “critical” characteristic for some weapons. Boss death animations will remain unchanged.
-The reticles are different colors for each player.
-The color of the blood can be changed.
-Unlikely the game will be at E3.
– The price can be between $ 15 and $ 20.
-The controls were “difficult” to implement, but the remake team is not worried about a possible backlash.
-The HOTD remake is getting better day by day and is said to be in better shape today than when Panzer Dragoon: Remake launched.
