Fabio Quartararo dominated the Italian MotoGP on Sunday on a Mugello circuit rocked by the death a few hours earlier of Moto3 rider Jason Dupasquier.

The French leader of Yamaha in the world championship waved a Swiss flag on the podium in honor of his 19-year-old “friend” whose promising young career was brutally cut short.

The death of the Swiss teenager was announced around noon by MotoGP organizers after succumbing to injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident during qualifying on Saturday.

Quartararo crossed the finish line with more than two and a half seconds of daylight to come second to Portugal’s Miguel Oliveira, while reigning world champion Joan Mir completed the grim podium after losing a place to penalties incurred.

The sixth stage of the season was preceded by a minute of silence for Dupasquier – the sport’s first death since Luis Salom died during testing at the Moto2 Catalan Grand Prix in Barcelona in 2016.

While the MotoGP roadshow persisted despite the tragic circumstances, it was Quartararo, who set a new lap record on pole on Saturday, who took his third win of the season to tighten his grip on the rider standings.

He is now 24 points ahead of Zarco with Francesco Bagnaia, who fell early on Sunday, two more points behind in third and Australian Jack Miller, winner of the two races before Mugello, in fourth.
