Getting a PS5 since its launch has been difficult for many consumers, and it turns out that it will continue to be difficult beyond the first full year of the console’s lifespan, according to Sony.
“I don’t think demand will calm down this year and even though we secure a lot more devices and produce a lot more PlayStation 5 units next year, our supply might not meet demand,” Hiroki Sony’s Totoki told analysts (via Bloomberg)
The “demand” has already made the PlayStation 5 the best-selling console in history, but it would have generated even higher numbers had the supply been there. What is happening here? Why can’t they just… do more?
It would be the global shortage of solid-state chips, used in a ton of electronics, but they’re a key part of game consoles in particular, including the PS5. Blame a combination of COVID and Trump’s Chinese policies for the problems, which are now spreading that Trump has stepped down and the pandemic is ending in many parts of the world. And these latest reports suggest that previous expectations of improving the situation throughout 2021 have now been changed to expect shortages through 2022.
Of course, in the case of the PS5, the situation has not been helped by an army of scalpers and their robots who have been able to source their supplies from retailers whenever new units are put into service. This was a problem at launch and will remain so as long as the PS5s are not readily available.
It’s unclear whether Sony will need to adjust their sales forecast for this year, as they previously said they expected to surpass the PS4’s 14.8 million units, but that will just depend on their ability to increase. the offer. The demand is easily there to sell so many PS5s, it seems, but the chip shortage is critical unless Sony partner AMD can pull several million micro bunnies out of a hat.
Sony is having a great year for the PS5. They’ve already launched the critically acclaimed Returnal. Ratchet and Clank is coming soon. This fall should mark the launch of Horizon Forbidden West. Last time around we heard that God of War 2 was also due to be in 2021, but I don’t think anyone actually thinks that will happen. But still, as long as Sony can’t have the supply to meet the demand, they lose revenue from consoles, games and sales of services. But they may simply be unable to do anything for a while, as it all falls to their material partners facing a global crisis.
