Pro-Palestinian Paris rally banned amid rising tensions between Israel and Gaza – fr

Activists called the demonstration in the Barbes neighborhood, north of Paris, to demonstrate against Israel’s use of force in the Gaza Strip in response to rocket fire by the militant group Hamas on the Jewish state.

“I asked the Paris police chief to ban demonstrations linked to recent tensions in the Middle East on Saturday,” Darmanin wrote on Twitter.

“Serious disturbances of public order were noted in 2014,” he added, urging police chiefs elsewhere in France to remain vigilant in the face of protests.

On July 19, 2014, however, several thousand demonstrators defied the ban on a demonstration in Barbès and the rally quickly degenerated into violent clashes that lasted for hours.

Arrest of Palestinian rights group condemned

On Wednesday, Paris police detained the head of the French Palestinian rights group Association France Palestine Solidarity (AFPS) for several hours near the Foreign Ministry building for several hours before his release.

Bertrand Heilbronn was arrested after meeting an adviser from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a delegation comprising parliamentarians and representatives of unions and organizations, AFPS said in a statement.

The detention of the 71-year-old veteran activist aroused the indignation of several left activists and political figures, including Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the leader of La France insoumise (France Unbowed).

Last year, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) overturned a conviction by France’s highest court, the Court of Cassation, which criminalized peaceful protests by the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

BDS calls for an Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Palestinian territory.

The ECHR found that the freedom of expression of 11 BDS supporters had been violated by the October 2015 decision in Paris.
