Abby M. Dibbs, 35, of Cross Plains, faces interim charges of sexual assault of a child by a school staff member. She is expected to appear in court for the first time on Friday afternoon.
Dibbs was arrested on Thursday. Officials from the Portage Community School District contacted the Portage Police Department on Wednesday after learning of a possible relationship.
According to a criminal complaint, Dibbs told detectives that she had sex twice with a student last weekend at her home in Cross Plains. Dibbs told detectives that she and the teenager discussed having feelings for each other and that “the lines have been crossed,” according to the complaint.
Detectives said the teenager also admitted to having sex with Dibbs at her home. The teenager told authorities he developed feelings for Dibbs and was upset by the person who “dislodged” them, according to the complaint.
“It’s obviously sensitive because a minor is involved. There is also a relationship of trust between teachers and students; it’s a great betrayal of trust, ”Garrigan said.
Dibbs was an English teacher at Portage High School. The Portage Community School District released a statement about the investigation on Friday, saying Dibbs was no longer employed by the district and would not be returning to class.
“Upon learning of this matter, the district responded immediately and contacted law enforcement,” said Dawn Brauner, spokesperson for the Portage Community School District. “We are confident that the school and all buildings in the district are safe and secure for all students and staff. We appreciate the efforts of our law enforcement agencies to resolve this issue. “
Brauner said the district will not release any further information about the investigation at this time.
