Ontario has not set a date for school children to resume their education in the classroom, Education Minister Stephen Lecce said.

Dr. David Williams, Ontario’s chief medical officer of health, has not changed his advice to offer distance learning exclusively, Lecce said Tuesday.

“We continue to face real problems in the province of Ontario, high rates of community transmission and our intensive care units continue to face incredible levels of stress,” he added. “And that’s why the province has acted by extending the stay-at-home order.”

Ontario elementary and secondary students have been learning remotely since April.

The government is ensuring that families still have the option of taking full-time e-learning in the fall, he confirmed.

NDP MP Marit Stiles said the announcement revealed the Doug Ford government’s plan to push the province towards lifelong online learning despite an “absolutely horrible” experience for families during the pandemic.

She said online learning has damaged children’s mental health and forced some parents out of the workforce.

“It’s pretty clear that planning e-learning for the entire next school year isn’t just about COVID-19, it’s about government saving money on the backs of our children,” and it always has been, ”Stiles said.

The government’s plan includes $ 1.6 billion to make schools safer in the fall and help children recover from a learning loss due to a disrupted school year, according to Lecce.

The plan will also preserve a family’s choice for e-learning in September, which parents have said is important amid the lingering uncertainty caused by the pandemic, he said.

“We are making sure that every school board in Ontario will offer this choice of a virtual learning experience, and we have asked them to give parents more time to make that choice,” said Lecce. “This is what we are confirming today.”
