Ontario plans to expand the age group eligible to book an appointment for the COVID-19 vaccine through its portal this week to 40 and over.

According to the latest update to the vaccination plan, people in Group 2 of those who cannot work from home will also become eligible for an appointment during the week of May 10.

Half of the doses distributed this week will be distributed among all public health units and the remaining 50% will be sent to COVID-19 hot spots.

As of May 5, the province expected to receive 787,410 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine on Monday, and nearly 6.3 million additional doses by the end of June, divided into weekly deliveries.

Moderna doses are also expected, but questions remain about the supply of AstraZeneca.

Ontario public health officials have asked the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) for a recommendation on vaccine mixing.

Ontario reported 3,216 new cases of COVID-19 and 47 other virus-related deaths on Sunday.

Would you consider mixing a messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine like Pfizer or Moderna with a viral vector vaccine like AstraZeneca or Johnson & Johnson, or should they be similar vaccines?

Response from the Ontario Ministry of Health: “We are waiting to hear more about the results of other jurisdictions that have used this model as well as advice from our federal partners at Health Canada and NACI.”

What happens to Ontarians who have taken AstraZeneca if the supply isn’t there for a second shot?

Assistant Medical Officer of Health Dr Barbara Yaffe: “We have asked NACI to come back with recommendations on the potential for vaccine mixing that have been made in the UK and other countries. We were originally waiting to see the study results in the UK, but they won’t be available until June. “

Who is next in the deployment of the vaccine?

(Note: individual public health units may set their own vaccine priorities and plans may change based on vaccine supply or demand)

Those 40 and over: Eligible Ontario residents will be able to book at any point during the week of May 10 through the province’s online dating portal.
