Malcolm Bright can unfortunately add “dropout issues” to his long list of issues. Fox canceled Prodigal son after two seasons, TVLine learned, turning the May 18 season finale into a series finale.

Fox declined to comment, but a network insider told TVLine the decision to unplug the drama thriller was “incredibly difficult,” however, adding that Prodigal sonThe number of viewers was too small to justify its return for a third season.

Through his May 4th episode, Prodigal son is averaging just north of 2 million weekly viewers and a demo rating of 0.4 (in Live + Same Day numbers) – down 38 and 45% from its first year. Of the six original dramas Fox has aired this TV season, it ranks fourth in both measures, exceeding only the already canceled. Filthy Rich and FOLLOWING.

Prodigal son played Walking Dead former Tom Payne as Malcolm Bright, a profiler for the NYPD and, sadly, the son of Martin Whitly – better known as infamous serial killer The Surgeon (Michael Sheen, Masters of sex). As Bright helped the Major Crimes Division solve gruesome and unconventional cases, sometimes with his father’s input, he attempted to deal with the psychological toll taken by reconnecting with Martin. (Emphasis on “attempted”.)

The cast also included Lou Diamond Phillips (Longmire) as Gil Arroyo, NYPD lieutenant and Bright’s long-time mentor; Bellamy Young (Scandal) as Jessica, Bright’s mother; Halston Sage (L’Orville) like Ainsley, Bright’s sister (and herself a murderer!); Aurora Perrineau (When they see us) as Dani, Bright’s colleague and potential love affair; Frank Harts (Billion) as Det. JT Tarmel; and Keiko Agena (Gilmore filles) as medical examiner Edrisa, who had a serious crush on Bright during the show’s run.

Oscar winner Catherine Zeta-Jones has been added to the cast this season in an effort to increase the series’ late ratings.

As Season 2 draws to a close, Bright is on the hunt for his father on the loose, who escaped from Claremont Psychiatric Hospital on May 4, while trying to cover up the murder of Nicholas Endicott by his sister. The series finale now airs Tuesday, May 18 at 9 / 8c.
