Police urged a mother for medical help after finding a dead newborn baby in the canal.
Officers found the child’s body in the Grand Union Canal in Willesden, north-west London, at 1:19 p.m. this afternoon.
The force opened an investigation into the circumstances of the death.
A cordon remains in place next to the waterway on Old Oak Lane.

An employee of a canal-side restaurant told the Standard: “The police and the firefighter were here but I can’t say anything more. “
In a brief statement, a Met Police spokesperson said: “Cords are in place at the canal near Old Oak Lane NW10 where the body of a newborn baby was found in the water at 1:19 pm .
“Investigation in progress to establish the circumstances. We urge the baby’s mother to seek medical assistance via 999. “
An eyewitness said the path along the canal was a popular cycle route and that the police had to “keep a lot of people away.”
“There were lots of emergency services there, including a more specialized incident response vehicle. Very sad news, I did not expect this to be what happened, ”they added.
