The cast spreads over the arrival of Kristin Cavallari, the meetings, the breakups and the babies!
“The Hills: New Beginnings” returns for its second season this week – and the stars promise the show is better than ever with its return.
Season 2 production began in early 2020, ending three episodes before the coronavirus pandemic brought them to a halt. They didn’t pick up again until 9 months later – and filming under these new protocols posed challenges, but also sparked additional drama.
“Obviously we did a lot of filming together. So that definitely sparked a lot of conflict between the band and we really weren’t able to bring in other cast members like we could before, ”Brody Jenner told TooFab ahead of the premiere. “So it had its tough times, but it made TV awesome. We had some really good, heavy, heavy stuff in there. And I think it’s a lot better than the original season – of course, a lot better. “”
Frankie Delgado has said that Season 2 feels like a whole ‘different’ show because the cast got to know each other again after pulling together in the first season. He said the new episodes had “that feeling that the“ original ”first Hills had when it highlighted Lauren Conrad’s whirlwind of breaking into the fashion industry. “The girls were inspired to move to LA because the show,” he said, hoping Season 2 will regain that magic.
“The first season was like, Hey, I haven’t seen you in 12 years and a lot of you guys that I didn’t have the best communication with last time around. I was like three leaves in the wind, but nice to see you again, ”added Jason Wahler. “It was very strange for me. This season I really felt like I was like, ‘Okay, I finally know where I am right now.’ So I was really happy with it. This season has been much better than last season. “
Here’s what else the cast told us about the new season – including information on Kristin Cavallari’s return, Audrina Patridge and Justin Bobby’s relationship, and a conversation with Spencer and Heidi Pratt.
Kristin Cavallari is back
The first teaser of “New Beginnings” ended with a moment of microphone drop: the return of Kristin Cavallari in the series. While she wasn’t present for every episode, fans were thrilled to see her back in the mix – and hopefully shake things up with ex Brody.
“I think we like it when Kristin comes. She’s so good at what she does, ”Jenner told TooFab. “She’s been doing this for so long and when she walks in she just knows how to bring warmth.” So she filmed a few things but she certainly stirred the pot for sure. “
“When she first walked in I hadn’t seen her in many years and she felt like a celebrity to me,” Frankie added. “I forgot we were like, we’re all best friends, so that was kinda awesome. I remember I had it punk back in the day on the show. As soon as she walked in it was like it had been a day since I saw her type of feeling. “
While Brandon Thomas Lee hadn’t met her before, he said that Cavallari was “a bit of a firecracker” – as Heidi exclaimed, “We love Kristin! “
“Her energy is amazing and just her presence in the band – she knows us all,” Audrina added. “It just brought life because we were only touring with our band during this pandemic. So to get her in, it was like ”Kristin! It was so exciting. “
Spencer said he was hopeful Kristin would return in the coming seasons, as he felt she and Brody “had almost started making movies on the rocks.” Although we don’t know how serious he was, he did say that Audrina was also hiding in Brody’s car when this happened and “Brody knew that Audrina was spending the night at his house so he wouldn’t. can’t kiss [Kristin] At the time.
“There are some exciting surprises in store for all of you,” is all Patridge would add.
There are quite a few stars on the prowl when the show returns, after high-profile splits or decisions not to pursue potential romances since the end of Season 1 filming. Brody and Kaitlynn Carter have called for a stop. between seasons, while viewers saw Audrina and Justin Bobby decide there was nothing going for them throughout the first batch of episodes. The Season 2 trailer teases a possible Brody-Audrina connection and Patridge’s short romance with Sean Stewart.
“I think Audrina has overcome the biggest hurdle of her life and is able to open up and be herself again,” Justin told TooFab. “And me, I kind of had to stop touring and doing whatever I was doing nomadically and come to my senses. “
“We’ve known each other for so long and with all friendship there are ups and downs and I think this season we kind of came back and we met and talked about things,” Audrina said of their relationship. “You will have to watch and see what happens. “
Carter told TooFab she does a lot of Zoom therapy between seasons, working on “a kind of rebuilding and understanding who I am as an individual.” When it came time to resume shooting with Brody, she was “a lot clearer about who I am and it just made me feel a lot more comfortable with what I was saying on camera.”
Brody told TooFab that he and Kaitlynn were still “good friends,” despite their breakup which made headlines. “I love Kaitlynn. We spent six years together. It was a big mutual break. There was no animosity, it was just totally clean. Everything was great, ”he added of the breakup itself.
The trailer also teased Heidi and Spencer as they explored the possibility of expanding their family, something Pratt was not thrilled about became a constant topic of conversation while doing the press all day.
“Well, they continue to be bred today,” he told TooFab. “Heidi is obviously very sad that she is not pregnant. I’m also very sad, before I was, but now it’s starting to turn into – I’m sorry, I guess we should have tried during the pandemic. Looking at his wife, he added, “I let you down.” I’m sorry, ”before looking for some, uh, supplements.
“I think we are in a good position. I’m actually glad I didn’t get pregnant before, ”Heidi added. “Even with the show, it was really stressful on and off camera. So, I think it was not a good time to be pregnant. “
“We have a cast member or two who are pregnant… I’m the kind of person that if I was pregnant, I actually wouldn’t have been very involved in the show,” she continued. saying she is grateful. the timing. “But we’re trying,” Heidi concludes, “You never know, it could be the month, so let’s keep trying! “
While Mischa Barton was one of the big draws – at least early on – of the first season, she’s MIA when “New Beginnings” returns. Instead, Caroline D’Amore joins the cast and brings a different energy to the series from her star predecessor “OC”.
“I don’t really think Mischa – she doesn’t really come from the real world. She’s more of a scripted actress and I think when she came along, you know, she didn’t really know anyone, ”Brody said. “A lot of us grew up together, we’ve known each other for a very long time and I think Mischa came along, did her own thing. I don’t think she really tried to interact with us. I think she was just doing her own thing. So ultimately I don’t think it really worked. “
“Mischa was really entertaining the second they turned the cameras on. disabled“Pratt added.” So I feel like that was his problem. I think Mischa off camera is a hit show. So I think Caroline is more of a person in front of the camera, and that’s the big difference. I don’t think the cameras change Caroline, if anything helps her grow taller. “
Wahler echoed those thoughts, saying that “with this type of show you have to have that transparency, need to be open and I think that’s something Caroline brings to the show compared to Mischa – this was just not the right solution. “
This season’s production was certainly unlike anything the cast members had experienced before. While the testing process was rigorous, they were all excited to be reuniting with other people again – and believe the new season could be seen as a time capsule of the pandemic era going forward.
“I think anything to get us out of the COVID funk. I think I can do it legally, and I can see our friends again and be like, ‘What did you do?’ It was really, really important for us to meet each other at that time, ”said Justin.
While Audrina said the initial shutdown was “kind of a buzzkill,” she jumped at the chance to return to filming. “I was like, ‘What are we doing? Brandon said. “I didn’t know what it was going to look like but it turned out to be really amazing and honestly it was surprising and I had a blast. “
“I like the idea that in 20 to 50 years hopefully when people return to ‘The Hills’ – I hope COVID isn’t something that happens forever and that it was just that time. horrible – that we are like a time capsule, ”Spencer said. “Like a modern type history book, this is what it was like trying to live during a pandemic. “
“I hope we just have to be a part of a very horrible and weird time and make the most of it,” he added.
“The Hills: New Beginnings” returns May 12 on MTV.
