Millers held by Mid-Table Hatters – fr

Elijah Adebayo hit the crossbar for Luton in the first half

Rotherham United’s championship survival hopes are out of hand heading into the last game of the season after they were only able to pull their game in hand at Luton Town in the middle of the table.

The Millers started the day three points behind the fourth Derby, but they knew winning in their last two games would likely keep them from relegation due to their superior goal difference.

In a frantic first half, Elijah Adebayo hit a shot against the woodwork and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s corner came off the post for Luton, while Rotherham also hit the post by the skillful lob of Matt Crooks.

The visitors edged closer to a winner after the break as Crooks led the handsome cross from Ryan Giles agonizingly wide at the far post.

Paul Warne’s Rotherham – who has played 11 league games in 33 days and has won just one – will have to win in Cardiff on Saturday and will be hoping Derby will fail to beat relegation rivals Sheffield on Wednesday if they want staying up.

Wayne Rooney’s Rams will be safe with the win over the second last Wednesday, which must win at Pride Park and hope Rotherham doesn’t triumph against Cardiff if they are to avoid going down to Ligue 1.

The point for Luton secures them a finish in the first half and extends their unbeaten run to six games as they continue their impressive end to the season.

Adebayo nearly beat goalkeeper Jamal Blackman from a difficult angle, but his effort crashed into the bar and the Dewsbury-Hall corner would have been straight in if it hadn’t been for Blackman clawing the ball against the post and pulling out .

Rotherham set to beat Cardiff on Saturday and hope Derby doesn’t win to stand

Rotherham carried the threat as well, with Michael Smith putting a free header wide as Crooks watched his dink on Simon Sluga bounce back and come back from the post.

The second half was a lower key affair but Crooks may regret his missed header as Luton’s Sonny Bradley had a goal in the stoppage time from a corner denied for a foul.

Luton director Nathan Jones told BBC Three Counties Radio:

“There was a lot of effort, a lot of honesty and trying to make the breakthrough, but we just lacked a bit of quality that night.

“We hit the bar, hit the post and had some really good counter attacks when they were opened and we didn’t quite show enough quality.

“I’m so proud of the team because they showed real honesty – we played well, we kept the integrity of the league and our club and we are in the spotlight of this league. .

On Sonny Bradley’s unauthorized goal: “There was nothing wrong with that goal – it’s probably a safe decision in the end so neither side loses it – it’s a terrible decision. “

Rotherham boss Paul Warne told BBC Radio Sheffield:

“We created enough chances to win – like Luton – but we just didn’t take any.

“If ever there was a night to win a game, it was tonight and unfortunately we just failed.

“If we manage to win [on Saturday] so we give ourselves a chance – there are all these connotations but you just have to go and win.

“This whole bunch of games killed us – we didn’t play too badly but we weren’t as sharp as I would like us to be and whether it was fatigue or ability, I don’t know. “
