Tom Cruise handed out his three Golden Globe Awards to protest the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s lack of representation and inclusion among its membership.
Mission impossible Actor Cruise joins Marvel stars Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson, who are among those speaking out in Hollywood against the HFPA.
Deadline reports Cruise sent the trophies he won for Jerry Maguire, Born July 4 and Magnolia at HFPA headquarters.
A report: Golden Globes spark negative reactions The walking dead new star movie
Ruffalo said in a statement: “It is disheartening to see the HFPA, which has gained notoriety and has benefited greatly from its involvement with filmmakers and actors, resist the change demanded of them from many groups that have most deprived of their rights culture of secrecy and exclusion.
“Now is the time to step up and right the wrongs of the past. Honestly, as a recent Golden Globe winner, I cannot feel proud or happy to have received this award. “
Johansson also issued a statement, recalling being faced with “sexist questions and remarks” from members of the HFPA “who bordered on sexual harassment.”
“This is the exact reason why I, for many years, refused to attend their conferences,” she continued. “The HFPA is an organization that has been legitimized by figures like Harvey Weinstein to create momentum for Academy recognition and the industry has followed suit.
“Unless there is fundamental reform needed within the organization, I believe it is time we took a step back from the HFPA and focused on the importance and strength of unity. within our unions and the industry as a whole. “
The HFPA faced extensive scrutiny following a Los Angeles Times report earlier this year which pointed out that there were no black voting members. The association’s financial arrangements and membership criteria have also been criticized.
Meanwhile, NBC has announced that it will not be broadcasting the 2022 Golden Globes.
“We continue to believe that the HFPA is engaged in meaningful reform,” the broadcaster said. “However, a change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we are convinced that the HFPA needs time to get it right. As such, NBC will not be showing the 2022 Golden Globes.
“Assuming the organization executes its plan, we hope we will be able to air the show in January 2023.”
Last week, Netflix and Amazon studios also took a stand, saying they would stop doing business with the HFPA until bigger reforms took place. WarnerMedia has since joined them, according to Variety.
In response to NBC’s withdrawal from the 2022 awards ceremony, the HFPA issued a statement, with a timeline for the organization’s reforms.
The reforms include reviewing and approving a new code of conduct in consultation with publicists and studios, continuing to educate potential new candidates, and starting the search for a DCI (diversity, equity) manager. and inclusion) / HR and identification of a potential new CEO. / CFO and other executives to lead the organization. ”
The HFPA added, “Regardless of the upcoming Golden Globes air date, implementing transformational change as quickly – and thoughtfully – as possible remains our organization’s top priority.
“We invite our industry partners to sit down at the table to work with us on long overdue systemic reform, both in our organization and in the industry generally. “
