Manchester United players’ ratings against Villarreal in Europa League final – Samuel Luckhurst – fr

David De Gea
Disappointed with defenders as United weakly gave in to Gerard Moreno and had little to do before the shootout. Didn’t come close to any of the penalties and missed his. 4

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Despite all the ball United had, their right-back too often disappointed with his cross. Does little harm defensively. 6

Victor Lindelof

Was fully aware of Moreno and barely fought to thwart him for the goal. But he lashed out at his penalty. 6

Eric Bailly

Made a clumsy mistake early on. Not directly responsible for Moreno’s goal and generally solid. As you might expect, he gave in in overtime. 6

Luke Shaw

Blindsided by Moreno for the goal and berated by Solskjaer for not staying high. Not at its usual level of performance. The penalty sort of stirred. 6

Scott McTominay

Thrown a shot when he should have hit the target, but rallied to win the corner with a brave play and drove steadily forward. 7

Paul pogba

Initially he was promising for depth, but United would have been better off with Pogba further forward. Surprisingly made way for overtime. 6

Mason Greenwood

Easily United’s best player in the first half and carried his form in the second half. Energetic, ran endlessly but somehow hooked up first. 7

Bruno Fernandes

All told, he grabbed the ball hoping for a penalty to save his performance. Never really overnight and pretty much converted into a penalty. 5

Marcus Rashford

Ran in the defenders as a learner driver plowing in the cones. Contributed to the equalizer with his shot that bounced off Cavani’s path, but it was a big game Rashford will want to forget. Somehow he stayed on the penalty spot and scored. 3

Edinson Cavani

Fought off a good 0-0 opening but was in the right place at the right time to activate the rebound and shift United’s momentum. Stuck his penalty too. 7

Submarines

Fred

Took a penalty and converted without nervousness. 7

Daniel James

Came in to take a penalty and scored. 7

Axel Tuanzebe

Took a big penalty. 7

Alex Such

Pressed on a penalty and scored. 7

Juan Mata

Pressed on a penalty and scored. 7

Director

I was wrong in recalling Rashford, then he lacked the courage to replace him – or make a replacement within 90 minutes. No need to remove Greenwood. 4
