“I desperately wanted the club to win the Premier League during my tenure and I’m sure the foundations are in place for us to win it back for our passionate fans.
In the aftermath, Van der Sar has been linked with a comeback.

The Dutchman is a legend at the club at Old Trafford who helped them win four Premier League titles under the reign of Sir Alex Ferguson.

He was also the hero of the 2008 Champions League final, notoriously turning down Nicolas Anelka in the penalty shootout win over Chelsea.

And Solskjaer, when asked about a potential return, hinted that he would agree with the idea.

“It’s not my department but of course the criterion is that you always have Man United in mind,” said the 48-year-old.

“Your job is to do the best you can for Man United – and that’s what I’m trying to do.
