Madeleine McCann was killed in Portugal, German police say.

Investigations into prime suspect Christian Brueckner, 44, led detectives to dismiss the theory that he moved the British toddler to his native Germany after his disappearance from Praia da Luz in 2007.

Prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters is now adamant that Maddie, who would have turned 18 this week, died in Portugal.

When asked where he thought she was killed, he told Mirror Online: “In Portugal. I am optimistic that we will resolve this matter. “

Mr Wolters has long claimed to have “hard evidence” that would prove Brueckner killed Maddie, but never shared any details.

Much of the evidence gathered so far is circumstantial in nature and has not yet proven sufficient to lay a murder charge against convicted pedophile Brueckner.

The vagrant, who often lived in a motorhome, is currently serving a seven-year sentence for raping a 72-year-old American woman in the Algarve in 2005.

After being named as a prime suspect last June, police searched the property and land he owned for evidence to link him to the crime. This included a housing estate in Hanover where he often stayed.

Mr Wolters added: ‘Since Christian B did not have the allowance at the time of Maddie’s disappearance, he could not have buried a body there. ”

Brueckner lived in Portugal occasionally for 22 years, but managed to slip under the police radar despite previous sexual offenses against children.

He was twice extradited from Portugal for sex crimes against children, once in 1999 and again in 2017.

And although he was arrested for exposing himself to children at a playground just 30 minutes from the Algarve four years ago, he has never been entered into Portugal’s sex offender register.

He was appointed by German police last year, forcing several alleged victims and people who knew Brueckner to come forward and provide key information.

German police hope to bring formal charges against him this year.

Brueckner’s lawyer Friedrich Fulscher insists it has nothing to do with Madeleine’s disappearance.

It comes after her parents, Kate and Gerry, paid tribute to their daughter last week, writing, “Happy 18th birthday, Madeleine. We love you and we are waiting for you and we will never give up.
