Liverpool announced the signing of center-back Ibrahima Konaté from RB Leipzig yesterday and the summer transfer window is not even fully open yet. The Reds have a bit of work to do after the craziness of last season, considering all the injuries they’ve suffered. Even with setbacks, they managed to qualify for the Champions League and are looking forward to the 2021/22 season.
According to Carl Markham of the Belfast Telegraph, Liverpool are focusing on rewarding current stars before making further transfers. Mo Salah, Virgil Van Dijk, Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson are all expected to receive exceptional offers for their hard work last season. Keeping the squad together is important for Liverpool, and new deals for most of their stars mean the Reds have no intention of breaking up the squad that won the Champions League and Premier League in the past. over the past two years.
According to Markham, Liverpool have no plans to sign a replacement for Gini Wijnaldum. He says:
“A replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum is not being considered as Klopp feels he has enough options in this area with Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago, Keita – provided he can overcome his fitness issues – Curtis Jones, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner. ”
This stuff worries me. Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain can’t keep fit and James Milner is old. Jones deserves more minutes, but Wijnaldum was Klopp’s most played player. We could apparently have a problem next season in midfield similar to what Liverpool have experienced in defense this season. Hopefully this is just a smokescreen.
