Neville amazed Liverpool finished third

Gary Neville

Gary Neville admits he’s stunned by Liverpool’s third place finish this season, but the former Manchester United mainstay has praised his former rivals on their impressive end to the season.

In March, the reigning Premier League champions were in eighth place, but a 10-game unbeaten streak, culminating with five consecutive wins, saw Jurgen Klopp’s side climb to third.

Neville, who had spent the last day of the Premier League season commenting on Everton’s 5-0 beating by Manchester City, couldn’t hide his surprise when assessing the 2020 season final table / 21 on Sky Sports.

As Liverpool passed Chelsea and Leicester City in the final week of the campaign – with the FA Cup winners missing out on a Champions League qualifying spot – the Daily Mail quotes Neville as proclaiming:

“Did they finish third? Did they finish third? How did it happen? ”

Once he got over his initial shock, the retired right-back who won eight Premier League titles as a man of one club for Manchester United paid tribute to Liverpool’s solid finish after a season of difficult circumstances.

When asked if this was an incredible achievement, Neville replied:

” It is. Honestly, for them losing Van Dijk – it had a huge impact on Liverpool, but it also had a huge impact on City because they knew Liverpool couldn’t get over it. They were out.

“And once Liverpool got out that was it, they knew there was no one else equipped to compete with them.

“For Liverpool to come back from those six home losses on the rebound – wow, the champions lose six on the home rebound.

“To come back as they did, you have to give them real credit.”
