An eyewitness estimated that there were around 200 people during the disturbance which began around 8 p.m.

South Wales Police issued a statement at around 10:45 pm Thursday in which it said: ‘A number of our officers are at the scene of a large scale mess in the Mayhill area of ​​Swansea. Residents are urged to stay indoors while the matter is safely resolved. “

Superintendent Tim Morgan said: “What would have started as a vigil for a recently deceased local resident has escalated into violence, criminal damage and a blind disregard for public safety.

“We have a number of officers on the scene working to defuse the situation as quickly as possible and allow other colleagues in the emergency services to answer calls in the area.

“The incident is still ongoing and we urge everyone involved to vacate the area immediately.

“Those involved can expect to face vigorous action. Post-incident investigations will also aim to identify all those affected.

“In the meantime, we urge local residents to stay indoors while the matter is safely resolved.”
