French Lille international goalkeeper Mike Maignan underwent a medical exam from AC Milan on Tuesday as he prepared to sign for the Serie A club.
After the medical Maignan, who helped Lille win the French league title on Sunday, was broadcast on Italian television entering the club headquarters of AC Milan.
An official announcement of the transfer was expected “within 48 hours”, according to a source within the club.
Italian media have reported that Milan will pay Lille 15million euros ($ 18.4million) for the French third-choice goalkeeper and sign a three to five-year contract.
Italian international Gianluigi Donnarumma, who left for Milan this season, is at the end of his contract.
Milan, who will return to the Champions League next season after a seven-year absence, appear to have stepped up their pursuit of Maignan after months of unsuccessful negotiations with Donnarumma’s agent Mino Raiola.
Discussions with Raiola were “suspended” a few weeks ago.
Maignan, 25, born in Cayenne, Guyana, has a French cap and was selected for the Euros.
He went through the Paris Saint-Germain youth system but never played for the first team.
He joined Lille in 2015. He finished this season with 21 clean sheets as the club edged PSG to claim the Ligue 1 crown.
This title could be followed by an exodus.
Coach Christophe Galtier resigned on Tuesday and Lille was hit hard financially by the health crisis and the failure of Mediapro, the Ligue 1 broadcaster.
