Laos records first death linked to Covid-19 more than a year after the start of the pandemic – fr


A 53-year-old Vietnamese karaoke club employee has died of the virus in the capital Vientiane, the National Task Force for the Prevention and Control of Covid-19 said on Sunday.

The woman’s condition was complicated by diabetes and other medical issues, the Vientiane Times reported.

Laos has seen an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases since its New Years holiday on April 14.

As of Saturday, the country had only recorded a total of 1,233 cases, of which 1,184 were reported last month, according to data from John Hopkins University. Of these, 28 cases were recorded on Saturday.

The elderly contract the virus and those with underlying health conditions are more likely to have severe symptoms, the deputy director general of the country’s health department, Bouathep Phoumin, told a press conference. Sunday, according to the Vientiane Times.

Laos has administered 184,387 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine to its population of around 7.28 million, according to Our World in Data and CNN research from the University of Oxford.

Health officials have reportedly linked the recent outbreak to a super-broadcaster whose close contacts gave inaccurate information about their whereabouts and condition, the Vientiane Times reported.
