With Billy Joe Saunders threatening to pull out of his fight against Canelo Alvarez on Saturday if he is forced to fight in a 20-foot ring, we have either a fairly familiar situation of absurd drama of the fight week meant to draw the belated attention that there is a fight going on on Saturday, or maybe we could have a situation where a guy really isn’t going to fight.
This is possible, and Saunders is a guy strange enough that he does. I think it’s more realistic than Derek Chisora to have a fit over who walks in the ring first, or Dennis Hogan and his shorts decorations, anyway.
Now Boxing News is reporting that John Ryder is flying to Dallas tomorrow and is ready to step in if Saunders is actually reluctant to fight.
Everything here is “in theory”, as there is a good chance that Saunders (30-0, 14 KOs) will still be in the ring of Alvarez (55-1-2, 37 KOs) on Saturday on DAZN, but just for the sake of discussion here.
How to watch Canelo vs Saunders or maybe Ryder
Date: Saturday May 8 | Start time: 20 h 00 HE
Location: Stade AT&T – Arlington, TX
Online coverage: BadLeftHook.com
Ryder (29-5, 16 KOs) last fought in December, not exactly shining against Mike Guy but clearly winning anyway, and is most notable as a contender for a highly controversial loss to Callum Smith in November 2019 was training for a fight in June in the US, so he would be a little ahead of schedule, and we couldn’t fight for the title if he couldn’t make 168. But we would have a fight, which at some point is the most important thing, with around 60,000 expected at AT&T Stadium.
I still think we get the fights advertised. It’s not that uncommon for stuff like this to find its way through the news cycle during Fight Week. It is extremely it’s rare for someone to voluntarily withdraw from a fight like this.
