The fire is said to have engulfed two shipyards on Platt’s Eyot, an island on the Thames in Hampton, Richmond upon Thames.
Neighbors said they heard “big explosions” as the flames spread across the scene earlier today.
London firefighters said around 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines were on the scene to tackle the blaze, which engulfed two industrial units.
A witness wrote on Twitter: “Police / firefighters are backing people up. Lots of blows and blows.
“The fire is far from the road, surrounded by the river. But IT IS gigantic. “
A spokesperson for the London fire department said: ‘Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters were called to a blaze at two industrial units on the island of Platt’s Eyot in Richmond upon Thames.
“Firefighters are tackling a fire in two single-storey industrial units on the island. The only access to the island is via a footbridge, so the firefighters carried all of their hand gear to the fire.
“The brigade control officers received more than 60 calls about the fire.
“The brigade was called at 5:14 pm Fire crews from Twickenham, Kingston, Feltham, Heston, Richmond and other nearby fire stations are on the scene. “
The Surrey Fire and Rescue Service had previously tweeted: ‘Our firefighting service received 20 calls to #Hampton Boat Sheds tonight. We are currently assisting @LondonFire during this incident. Residents nearby should close windows and doors. ”
The images show a line of buildings completely gutted, with just the frames of the structures left standing.
A huge plume of black smoke can be seen rising from the stage for miles around.
However, heavy rains are now helping to extinguish the flames.
ITV reporter Jonathan Swain said London firefighters told him 15 fire engines were at the scene.
He tweeted: “A difficult fire for the crews to manage like 2 shipyards on fire on an island in the middle of the Thames near Molesey and Hampton. Residents try rescue boats moored on the island. The winds fan the flames. “
