Western forbidden horizon was the focus of the latest episode of Sony’s State of Play series, which featured a bunch of new gameplay details about Aloy’s next journey in a lengthy clip of gameplay footage.
In the 14-minute gameplay reveal, developer Guerrilla Games showed Aloy encountering a group of raiders from the Tenakth tribe who had captured his friend Erend. These enemies can replace and ride on the game’s mechanized beasts, known simply as Machines. Aloy herself led a Machine into battle against a gigantic new monster, a mammoth-like creature known as Tremortusk.
Aloy has many weapons and crossing tools at his disposal in West forbidden, including a projectile-based grappling hook called the Pullcaster and an electronic glider known as the Shieldwing. She can also swim underwater indefinitely thanks to her diving mask, which also helps propel her forward through the fast currents of the Pacific Ocean. Finally, upgrades to its Focus allow it to replace new types of machines such as Clawstriders – one of the many controllable robots in Western forbidden horizon – and highlight the ledges and other areas of the environment that it can grab while climbing.
Western forbidden horizon is in development at the Guerrilla Games in Amsterdam. In the open-world action game, Aloy will have to save Earth from a double threat: a “collapsing biosphere” caused by “red rust” that “suffocates wildlife and starves animals and tribes” and extreme weather events that take the form of “massive supercell storms,” game director Mathijs de Jonge said during the game’s unveiling last June at Sony’s PS5 reveal event. Sony later announced that Western forbidden horizon will also be available on PlayStation 4.
Surprisingly, Sony did not reiterate its previously announced 2021 release window on Thursday. Western forbidden horizon Narrative Director Ben McCaw said in a PlayStation Blog post that “we don’t have an exact release date yet, but development is on track and we’ll have an update for you very soon.”
L’original Horizon Zero Dawn debuted in February 2017 on PS4 and ended up being one of the best-selling games on the console. It tells the story of Aloy, a young woman on the verge of adulthood who leaves her village to hunt down the people who attacked her tribe and tried to kill them. The game is set in the 31st century, in a world where humanity lives a primitive existence on Earth – life having been reseeded after being entirely wiped out in the 21st century by a plague of killer robots.
