Level assignments as of May 25

On April 6, Governor Gavin Newsom announced a plan to fully reopen the California economy on June 15 if current COVID-19 trends continue. California would end their four-color tier system at this point. Newsom has since said that California’s mask mandate could also be lifted on June 15.

Until then, the state continues to make weekly adjustments to its tier system, and based on Tuesday’s update – the changes take effect Wednesday – none of California’s 58 counties remain in the state. purple level (considered a generalized risk). There will be 8 counties in the red level (two less than a week ago); 35 orange level counties (moderate risk, up from 39 two weeks ago); and 15 in the yellow tier (minimal risk, two more than a week ago). Three weeks ago there were only seven counties in the yellow category.

As of November 24, the state had 41 counties in purple, 11 counties in red, four in orange, two in yellow.

Counties are assigned at a level based on metrics indicating the speed and spread of the virus within their borders.
