“He would be an idiot” – Why Sam Bennett should lead at TDF, not Mark Cavendish – fr

Deceuninck-QuickStep general manager Patrick Lefevere would be an “absolute idiot” if he sent Mark Cavendish to the Tour de France on Sam Bennett, according to Eurosport expert Brian Smith.
The possibility of seeing the Manxman in Paris increased when Lefevere announced that contract negotiations with Bennett had failed.

Bennett won the points classification on the Tour last year and was due to lead Deceuninck again, but news of his imminent departure could see the team shifting focus.

Cavendish, 35, returned to form with four Tour de Turkey wins, fueling hopes he could improve on his 30 Tour de France stage wins.

However, Smith believes Deceuninck would be foolish to make Cavendish his main man in France.

‘Oh my God!’ – Cavendish takes a superb victory in stage 8

“I think Patrick Lefevere would be an idiot if he did [pick Cavendish over Bennett]Smith said.

As much as I support and love Mark Cavendish, he would be an absolute jerk if he did that.

Cavendish is second in the list of all-time stage winners, four behind Belgian legend Eddy Merckx. He last won the Tour in 2016.

“These things happen. We are talking in May of people moving and things like that. Teams don’t help each other by talking about this, ”added Smith.

“I think Sam Bennett will go 100% on the Tour de France with Deceuninck-QuickStep.”

Bennett only joined Deceuninck in 2020, quickly dethroning the ubiquitous points classification winner Peter Sagan at the Tour de France in September.

He is currently competing in the Tour of the Algarve, where he won two stages.

Joao Almeida will also leave Deceuninck after the 2021 season after failing to secure a new contract.
