Gulf of Mexico explosion: several injured after gas well ignited – emergency services rush | World


The fire broke out at an oil and gas field in St. Mary’s Parish, which ignited Tuesday afternoon, with officials saying no deaths were recorded. Shared contractors from the Texas Petroleum Investment Company were working to close a well in the Belle Isle field and were injured when a spark ignited natural gas. Acadian ambulance responded to an incident with four helicopters and five ground units, a spokesperson confirmed. Two patients were flown, two by boat to Morgan City. Four people were sent to nearby burning centers and four refused to seek treatment, a spokesperson for Oschner St. Mary said.

The Louisiana Department of Natural Resources said the gas leak began on Sunday, over Little Wax Bayou in Belle Isle, about 18 miles south of Patterson, Louisiana.
The contractors, from the oil spill response company Wild Well Control, arrived on Tuesday to seal the leak.

An explosion then occurred and four people suffered burns to their faces and hands.

Four people were sent to nearby burning centers and four refused to seek treatment, a spokesperson for Oschner St. Mary said.
A Louisiana State Police spokesperson confirmed to local media outlet WGNO that there is currently no threat to the public.

Chris Welty of the WGNO was also told by a Louisiana State Police spokesperson that the Emergency Services Response Team was on its way.
