Hundreds of farmers under the aegis of Union Bhartiya Kisan (BKU Ugrahan) continued their three-day protest in Patiala today, alleging that the Center and the state government failed to act against the spread of Covid-19.
On the second day of the unrest, 1,500 farmers gathered on the PUDA grounds ensuring social distancing. They wore masks, disinfectants and water bottles.
Secretary General Sukhdev Singh Kokrikalan said: “The government of Punjab should tell us where the money allocated to the Ministry of Health has been spent. Last year they got Rs 1,000 crore, but no one knows where they were spent. Why are all the fans available in Punjab still not working? They should answer why out of 2,010 level 3 beds, only 550 are in public facilities. Public hospitals have a bed for 55,455 people and people are suffering, especially in the villages.
Union leaders said the state and central governments failed to perform their duties during the pandemic. “The state government should provide monetary benefits to farmers and the families of those who have died from Covid as well as government employment,” they said. – TNS
